Epilogue

Six months later

Jasper came home from a long day watching over the town of Pioneer. The town had finally calmed down after the excitement over Missy Mae and her devious plans, and things seemed to have completely returned to normal. Jasper was extremely thankful for this because his life had been anything but.

After agreeing to adopt the little girl, he and Ora had stepped into being parents immediately. Little Hannah was a blessing but she didn’t understand the concept that sleep was for nighttime. Though her schedule had been flip flopped, it had given Jasper and Ora time to get to know one another better too. Nothing brought two people closer than lack of sleep and a new child in the home.

Today, as he rounded the bend that would lead him home, he thanked the Lord for Ora once again. He did so daily, and sometimes hourly. She was a blessing to him with her patience with he and Hannah both, her attention to the house, and her unwavering devotion to him. He couldn’t have married a better woman.

Even the fact that he had a family—something that had seemed so foreign to him no more than a year ago—was now normal. He was a husband and a father, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Welcome home,” Ora said, stepping onto the porch just as he neared the house. It was their ritual and he felt comforted to see she held little Hannah in her arms. Both of them seemed to look rested, something he’d prayed for, and that bolstered his spirits for the evening.

“I’ll be in after I put the horse away.”

She smiled, the kind that he had easily grown accustomed to and wanted to see when he looked at her. “We’ll be waiting,” she said with a laugh.

He rushed to put the horse away and then made his way inside.

Ora rushed toward him, her arms slipping around his waist. Surprised, he nearly stumbled back but clutched her to himself, kissing the top of her head.

“I see that you missed me,” he said with a laugh.

“I did,” came her muffled reply.

He frowned. “Any special reason.”

When she pulled back there were tears in her eyes. “I have some news.”

His heart pounded. If she was crying did that mean it was bad news?

“Don’t look so scared,” she said laughing, “It’s good news. At least I think it is.”

“All right,” he said warily.

She reached out and took his hands in hers. “I’ve told you about my childhood and you know what my life was like before I came to Pioneer. First, I just wanted to tell you how happy you’ve made me.”

Her smile radiated the happiness she spoke of and he bent down to kiss her, unable to resist.

“Then you suggested we adopt Hannah and I was even happier.” The tears rolled down her cheeks and he gently brushed them away. “But now I have more happy news.”

“I can’t stand the suspense, love,” he said with a laugh.

“I’m pregnant.”

The words landed heavily on his heart.
